Question: A hand lens is also provided in your rock kit; use the hand lens for magnified viewing. Separate the 7 samples into three groups based on their color (dark, light or intermediate). As a first attempt at classifying rock compositions based on color, most students end up with two light colored rock (felsic), one intermediate rock, and four dark colored rocks (mafic). There actually are only three mafic, one intermediate, two felsic, and one other rock that we have yet to discuss, but for now leave your samples as they are.
