Optimization Applications and Systems Engineering

Systems Design of a "Wi-Fi" antenna module for a Radio over fibre (RoF) transmitter

Learning outcome 1: Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the principles of computer systems engineering and optimisation, and identify their accompanying tools and techniques
Learning outcome 2:Apply identified computer system engineering and optimisation tools and techniques to design, develop and critically evaluate solutions to complex problems

The Task

You are a systems engineer working for UoBMK Consulting Ltd, a small-medium enterprise (SME) specialising in the custom design of hi-tech systems. The company embraces the use of formal systems design methodologies as they have found through experience that it increases customer satisfaction and the chance of producing a successful design.

A new customer has approached the company requesting it to facilitate in the design of a "Wi-Fi" antenna module for radio over fibre transmitter. The customer has a conceptual idea of the device as well as the functional requirements and application, but would like UoBMK Consulting to develop the technical design ready for manufacture. The customer has told you that the antenna module is to be part of a system for installation on a radio over fibre transmitter.
The customer has two machines that can be used to manufacture the antennas. One machine makes each antenna individually, and the other makes them in a block of five which is then cut up. There are two production workers who each work 8 hours per day. For an antenna made by the first machine, it takes a worker 5 minutes to prepare the material and box the finished product. For a block of 5 antennas, it takes 15 minutes to prepare the material, cut up the block and box the antennas. Each finished product must be checked by a quality control inspector; this takes 30 seconds per antenna if they are made individually, but it takes 1 minute per antenna if they have been made in a block (because the cutting up must also be checked). The inspector works part-time (3 hours per day).

Deliverables
As a senior systems engineer, you have been tasked with the systems design with the following tasks:
1. Using MATLAB, you are required to calculate length L and width W of the micro strip Wi-Fi antenna shown below, the centre Wi-Fi frequency of the antenna fc = 2.4 GHz, and bandwidth of the antenna is BW= 20 MHz.
2. Produce the following documents as part of the systems design process of the antenna:
- User Requirements Document (URD)
- Systems Design Document (SRD)
3. A report for the manager of the manufacturing department

The URD should include an analysis of the non-technical operating requirements for the full range of stakeholders.
The SRD should detail the technical system requirements (functional and non-functional); include a system hierarchy for the module, top level functional flow block diagram, any specific issues relating to alimentation, integration and system reliability.
The manufacturing report should describe the production as a mathematical optimization problem, show how the maximum number of antennas can be produced, and advise on how much the production can be increased if the inspector is employed for an extra hour per day. [Note that this mathematical problem is quite simple, and can be solved in one of various ways: graphically, using the simplex method with the steps of the calculation recorded by hand, using the MATLAB Optimization Toolbox, using Excel Solver, etc. But UoBMK Consulting Ltd wants to impress this customer with the range methods that the company can use; therefore, the report can show and compare the results of using more than one method].

Employ principles of systems engineering to develop the user/system requirement document of a computer-based system.
Model an aspect of the system, and find an optimal design.

To get a higher grade, the marking scheme below requires detailed and clear explanation of the concepts and methods of optimization. This will be helped if you use more than one method.

a) You must provide evidence that the work is done by your own, that references and quotations are given in the standard manner and that your report shows clear discussion and documentation.

b) Your report should be logically well structured and clearly written/presented.

c) Clear demonstration of understanding of the material presented in the literature.
