Systems Analysis & Design Skill Building Exercise #1
Project Management-PERT/Gantt
You have been asked to assist in project planning for a new systems development project. The project has been defined to contain the activities shown in Figure 1. The figure also shows the estimated completion time and immediate predecessor(s) for each activity.
Figure 1.
Estimated Immediate
Activity Time (weeks) Predecessors TE TL Slack
1 - collect requirements 2 ---
2 - analyze processes 3 1
3 - analyze data 3 2
4 - design processes 7 2
5 - design database 6 3
6 - design screens 1 3, 4
7 - design reports 5 4, 5
8 - program 4 6, 7
9 - test 8 8
10 - install 2 9
1. Construct a PERT chart for the project outlined above. Be sure to include: a) estimated completion time (ET), b) earliest completion time (TE), c) latest completion time (TL), and d) slack time for all activities. (Fill in table above; Draw the network; no need to repeat the numbers you fill in above on the network.)
2. What is the critical path for this project?
3. What would happen to the overall project schedule if the screen design activity takes 4 weeks instead of 1 week (assuming nothing else changes)?
4. What would happen to the overall project schedule if the programming activity takes 6 weeks instead of 4 weeks (assuming nothing else changes)?
5. Construct a GANTT chart for the above project (Figure 1). The GANTT chart does not need to distinguish between critical and non-critical activities
