A study to determine whether playing fast pace music over the public address system speeds up the shopping rates without adverse effect. This study would take a great deal of planning, data collection, data control and data analysis. For results to be established that can be depended on a study of no change to a store would need to be completed. This would set the benchmark of speed of shopper and amount of money spent by a shopper. It would be helpful to use multiple similar stores to ensure a large sampling of the population. From there at one or two of the sample test locations increase music speed for a controlled period. Data collected during this time would be the “delta” that may show a trend for this hypothesis to be true or to be false. This study could be furthered by testing different tempos of music to establish to what extent, if any, the pace of the music affects shopping habits. As was mentioned, there would need to be a great deal of planning on the part of the researcher or research institution. They would need to gain permission to test at multiple sites. In addition, the ethical dilemmas as mentioned in the text that the individuals who part of the study are should be aware needs to come into question. It would be difficult to get data that may not be affected by outside influence or knowledge of the study. The control variable would be the tempo of the music. The dependent variables would be time spent in store and amount of money spent. All of these things can be tracked to an extent and would be interesting data to analyze and draw conclusions from. ?
