A 17-year-old girl presents with symptoms of vague abdominal pain. The location of the pain is variable and is not associated with menses. She has difficulty describing the pain, but it does not seem to be colicky. There is some nausea but no vomiting. Her appetite has decreased, but her weight is stable. Her parents are worried because she seems withdrawn, and her academic performance has dropped significantly in the last several months. She is not sleeping well. She has no past medical history except for an appendectomy in childhood. Vital signs and physical examination findings are all unremarkable. What is the most critical question to ask to establish a diagnosis?
