Juanita 14 year s old was brought to the emergency department by her parents, who were worried by her symptoms of lethargy and confusion. They stated that Juanita had been experiencing gastroenteritis x 1 week, vomiting and diarrhea for the past 3 days. Juanita 's serum glucose level on admission was 535 mg/dl and her urine contained large amounts of ketones and glucose. Her arterial blood gas were PH 7.26, CO2 26, HCO3 15, PO2 125.
