Questions

1. According to the video, what food source do our digestive tract microbes helps us digest? Why?

2. As shown in the video, microbes help us digest food material that our cells do not digest. However, sometimes they make us uncomfortable after we eat certain foods. Such is the case of lactose intolerance. People with lactose intolerance lack the enzyme lactase in their digestive tract cells and thus can't metabolize lactose. When lactose gets into the intestines, the microbes metabolize lactose and release the products of this metabolism into the intestines, thus causing bloating and discomfort to the human. What is the metabolism done by the microbes in this case? What are the products of this metabolism?

3. What are the microbes inside the guts of the termites? What type of cells make these microbes, prokaryotic or eukaryotic?

4. Why is it important for the young termites to get the microbes from the older termites? Explain how is this the same for human babies.

5. What type of symbiotic relationship is shown between the termites and the microbes in their guts? What do each organism gets from this relationship?
