Unobtrusive Task - (1000 words)

Introduction: Seale identifies four kinds of participant-observation: complete participant, complete observer, participant as observer and observer as participant. For this assessment item you are to take the role of complete observer by selecting one everyday setting in the community to make sense of this setting. Such sites for example may include public sites such the esplanade or strand, coffee shops or a busy street space.

Task: You are to conduct one observation at a chosen social setting t Observe the social patterns of interactions between the participants over 1-2 hours and make some field notes which you can use in order to write up your data. For example, you may want to consider differences in gender, sex, social class or ethnicity with regard to indicators such as the way people dress, a description of the activities at your locale or how people interact (or not). In terms of recording information and ideas, please stay ‘low tech' by avoiding electronic recording devices such as iPads, cameras, voice recorders in order to be as unobtrusive as possible.
