A 35-year-old man is seen in the emergency department because he has developed a painful, swollen right knee and painful elbow. He is a runner who runs multiple miles a day for exercise. He also plays tennis 3 times a week. He has complained of body aches and pain before and mentioned having to ice his knee and elbow down after the exercise. After icing the joints, he feels better but the pain returns. The patient mentioned that he pain has increasingly gotten worse over the last year. He has no significant previous medical illnesses. He is married with two young children. He is a non-smoker. His right knee appears to be extremely swollen, hot and tender with limitation in flexion or bending the knee). The elbow isn't swollen, but he cannot extend it fully straight. He currently feels tired and has loss of appetite.
