Sustainable Energy Resources Assignment -
Task 1: QUIZ AND IN-CLASS GROUP WORK
Task 2: ORAL PRESENTATION AND WRITTEN REPORT
Overview - A specific topic related to sustainable energy options will be assigned to each group of around 4-6 students. The students will become the class experts on the particular topic assigned. Each group will investigate and do a detailed research and in-depth understanding of the assigned topic and submit a written report and give an oral presentation to the class. The total mark for this assessment is 20% which will be divided into 10% for oral presentation and 10% for written report. This exercise will enable collaborative learning, develop teamwork, and research and communication skills.
Group presentation format - Each group will be given a maximum of 25 minutes (min of 20 min) to present work using mainly Powerpoint presentation. There will be 5-10 min Q&A from the audience. An invited guest along with the lecturer will mark the presentations. Each group member should give valuable contribution to the oral presentation and written report. Task 3: SUSTAINABLE ENERGY PORTFOLIO REPORT
Scenario and scope of work -
There is an increasing demand for Australia and the rest of the world to move towards a low carbon economy, which necessitates changes in the generation and use of energy. In this context, a key component in developing a low carbon economy is the use of more sustainable energy. You are hired by the government as an energy consultant. The Australian government is contemplating on a strategy to become a sustainable energy country. Your role is to suggest what combinations of energy resources should we utilize and other efficiency strategies that could lessen the carbon footprint towards a sustainable energy country. Your report should not be limited only on the research you have done in current literature but should also include original intellectual contributions and critique of the information in the literature. Each one will have opportunity to mark other student's work (peer marking) in addition to the lecturer's marks. A marking rubric will be provided to guide in marking.
Written report format: Your report should include four main sections outlined below.

Originality statement (signed)
Title page,
Table of contents
9. Abstract (150 words)
10. Section 1: Background - Give an overview of the current energy generation/use/distribution in Australia. Discuss the different sources of energy, and their use and briefly compare it with the world use. Check the world energy trilemma score of Australia (use pathway calculator) and identify the issues (social, environmental, political, economic, technological, etc.).
Discuss how you can improve the score and its challenges.
The Energy Trilemma Index (World Energy Council) ranks countries on their ability to provide sustainable energy through 3 dimensions: Energy security, Energy equity (accessibility and affordability), Environmental sustainability.
11. Section 2: Strategies -
- Who are the key stakeholders and how do you plan to engage them?
- What combination of energy sources or other strategies is needed tom improve the trilemma index toward a sustainable energy future for Australia (make a sound justification)?
- How does your plan compare to the current energy portfolio? Identify the advantages and disadvantages of the chosen options with respect to performance/technology, 4 environmental, economic and societal aspects. You can refer to the book "Australian Sustainable Energy- by the numbers" on some strategies but do not copy. You can update book author's suggestions including new advances in technologies and energy policies (provide specific examples). Justify your choices.
- How do you intend to follow up communication and engagement of your plan?
12. Section 3: Zero carbon economy - Is it possible for Australia to have a zero carbon economy? Is going 100% renewable energy the answer? Justify your thoughts with references.
13. Section 4: Reflection and conclusion - Discuss what you have learned about sustainable energy and what you can contribute to achieve energy security (or what your role is for a sustainable energy future). Make a conclusion.
14. References (Use Endnote) (Use latest references).
Note - Please refer to task 3 only, rest is done.
