Is it critical? Yes it is! Surge protection measures prevent electrical current from traveling into the alarm panels and other components. If a power surge damages any of the electrical components of the alarm system, it can become damaged and faulty. Should that happen, the best case scenario is that you become notified of a fault within the system through one of the trouble panels, but you could very well have improper or non-functioning mechanics at the next alarm event and not even know it until a problem already exists.

I am a big advocate for surge protection. My hobby is working with computers and I have experienced first hand what happens when a power surge hits your home/work space and you do not have a surge protector in use. Thousands of dollars in damages later, I have surge protectors on all of my electronic equipment. I would rather spend $20-$40 on a quality surge protector that spend hundreds to thousands to replace fried expensive parts again.
