SPL404 Supporting Positive Learning Environments
Assessment: Communication Analysis & Personal Action Critical Reflection
Learning Outcome 1: Critically reflect on interoception, communication and the environment in the role of supporting positive learning environments in self-regulation and its relationship to learning
Learning Outcome 2: Critically analyse own and community biases, prejudices and assumptions associated with behavioural supports in educational and care settings
Learning Outcome 3: Apply supportive positive learning environmental strategies, including interoception and communication, with an individual to support self-regulation skill development and increase engagement in learning
Task Summary
Choose one of the following 3 scenarios and analyse the communication issues that arise. In a total of 2000 words, critically reflect on what action can be taken to improve support for the individuals and families/teachers involved, and present communication strategies that will support positive learning environments.
Please refer to the Task Instructions for details on how to complete this task.
Context
Not all communication is based on speech, despite the belief that if you are not speaking you are not communicating well. Sometimes speech amongst the neurodiverse community is not available due to stress, mental health reasons and/or disability. So this assessment is important because we are examining how else we can deliver best practice communication with these individuals.
In this task you will apply and critically reflect on best practice communication strategies with neurodiverse individuals to minimise anxiety and support self-regulation skill development and increase engagement in learning. This will enable you to modify the way you communicate with students/clients to facilitate positive self-expression and regulated behaviours.
Task Instructions
Critically reflect on and respond to the questions provided in relation to one of the scenarios below.
The scenario will cover either a person who does not use speech, a person who is verbal when non- stressed and non-verbal when stressed, as well as a fluent speaker.
You should structure your response in an essay style that includes a brief introduction and conclusion. The body should answer the questions as well as include a positive support plan for the scenario.
Please ensure that you reference the literature, as well as case studies and learnings from the subject material to inform and justify your responses.
Scenario 1
An individual who doesn't use speech wants to tell his ‘carers' that they would like to watch a particular YouTube show. S/He constantly interrupts the show others are watching and attempts to change the channel. When her/his carers shout at them to stop being rude, s/he takes no notice but keeps interrupting and grabbing the remote control.
Scenario 2
A very able individual with a known history of trauma isn't asking nicely if s/he can choose a YouTube Channel they would like to watch. They usually have no problem using their voice, but, today instead they barge in among the family watching another program, grab the remote control and try to change the channel. The family are cross and upset. They respond with shouting and the individual runs from the room screaming.
Scenario 3
An individual who hasn't any trouble using their voice to make their needs known is not recognising the needs of others within a classroom. They have yelled into a conversation demanding the interactive whiteboard show the YouTube channel they want to watch. A ‘yelling' match ensues and no-one gets to watch anything as the computer is unplugged and the individual is sent to the principal.
Questions
In relation to one of the above scenarios:
A) How could you help the individual showing behaviour of concern, to express their wants/needs/likes differently?
B) How can you support the family/teacher during this process so their communication is ‘on the same page'? Provide positive communication strategies to share with the family/teacher.
Referencing
It is essential that you use appropriate APA style for citing and referencing research.
