Message from Your Manager Assume that the following message was delivered to you, an employee of a government agency, shortly after the promotion of a new senior manager. This is the manager's inaugural address. Examine the message carefully, and then answer the following discussion questions: Message from Your Manager "I want to thank you for the many notes, calls, and expressions of congratulations and best wishes, which have been gratifying and encouraging. I feel privileged to work with you in this position. There are three principles I embrace in life, which I bring to the position: I listen, I believe in high standards, and I believe in what I do. First, I listen. I intend to listen as others share their concerns and goals. That includes you. I listen in two respects; first to hear your views and second, to hear others on their ideas affecting you. I think all too often we view listening as not having a position or ideas. Most who know me closely would agree that this is not my view. I see listening as a way not only to hear what others are saying, but also to understand the passion and conviction they feel for their ideas. Second, I believe in high standards of public service. This means we deliver what we promise. It means we treat others in and out of the workplace with respect and dignity. And, it means we work for the American public and are good stewards of the investment they have made in us, and in the resources we manage. As public servants we should expect the best from each other and most importantly, we owe the public the best of ourselves. Third, I believe in what I do. Working in the government is a career to cherish. It is about making a difference in the management of our resources and how we work with and truly care for each other and our customers. I believe in a healthy balance in life and a healthy workplace. I believe the work we all do is important, meaningful, and is critical to creating a better future." Questions: In what ways does this message use supportive communication principles? Based on this message, would you expect this manager to be more interested in coaching or counseling? Explain why. Based on this message, what type of organizational culture would you expect this agency to have?
