END OF YEAR CELEBRATION
You are the department manager. You are thinking about having an end-of-year Christmas celebration to acknowledge your team's hard efforts and contributions.
You have only just taken over the department, so you have not been fully acquainted with every staff member in the team. Having an informal get together will be a good way to get to know everyone better before the new year.
Your team consists of a mixture of people from all sorts of backgrounds, including Ahmed, Patty and Marco. Ahmed is Muslim and does not eat pork; Patty has flexible work arrangements and, if she's not working from home, she leaves earlier than everyone else so she can pick up her daughter from childcare; Marco requires the assistance of a wheelchair.
In collaboration with the team supervisor, you have come up with a range of celebration ideas that could be fun for the team. You have narrowed the suggestions to the following three options:
• Indoor rock climbing wall
• Having a barbecue at the city park
• Hiring a room at one of the local bars for some team drinks.
You need to ensure that the event accommodates everyone's needs.
1. Describe at least one potential issue that could arise for each of the celebration options suggested.
2. For each activity, describe how you would approach the individual needs of Marco, Patty and Ahmed to ensure it is a success.
3. Provide five strategies for supporting effective cross-cultural communication.
4. Provide five ways that you can support team diversity in a management role.
5. Explain how everyone is responsible for cultural inclusiveness
6. What are the advantages of culture and diversity in the workplace? Provide at least five examples.
7. Provide a communication strategy for each of the following groups: 1. Hearing impaired, 2. Low socio-economic group, 3. An offshore team.
8. Which of the communication strategies discussed in the previous question have you used in the workplace? What could have been improved?
