ASSIGNMENT - SUPPORT/EDUCATIONAL/SELF-HELP GROUP PROCESS EXERCISE
Purpose: This assignment provides student-colleagues with an opportunity to participate in a process (non-therapeutic) group, to document various aspects of the group's development and progress, and to reflect upon the four dynamics of group process, leadership styles and group member roles. This assignment also affords students an opportunity to demonstrate familiarity with and application of assigned reading material over the course of the semester.

Description: Student-colleagues will select an open support group (eg: AA, NA, Grief, Anxiety), Educational Group (eg: anger management, self-defense, stress) or Self-Help (eg: assertiveness, relaxation, health) to attend in person 1-2 times and submit to the Instructor at the beginning of the semester for approval. These groups can be found by looking online, newspaper or asking field supervisor. You cannot attend an online meeting. Group selections will vary according to the student interests or possible topics for workshop or treatment group assignments. Groups need to be social service or mental health focused. This group cannot be a group that you are a member.
Each student will produce a brief 1-2 page typed reflection exercise after attending the group and will contain the following items:
1. Name of the Group Attended
2. Type of Group and the Name of the Group
3. Location of the Group
4. Facilitator name or at least their credentials or reason they are qualified to lead the group
5. Purpose of the Group
6. Overall impressions of the group as it relates to group development/dynamics
a. Member composition
b. Introductions
c. Formal or informal rules/procedures
d. Culture
e. Cohesion
f. Communication
g. Confidentiality
7. Overall evaluation of leadership and effectiveness of the group experience
8. Overall impressions of your experience attending the group.
Evaluation Criteria:
Student Process Group Exercise will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
1. Inclusion of all requested elements
2. Neatness and organization of material
3. Expression of ideas (grammar, punctuation, sentence structure)
