Identification and explanation of quantitative and qualitative data collection tools including sample size and sampling method
Explanation of how the research activities related to the original decisions mentioned in the Proposal and Plan
Conclusions
Draw main conclusions and link to the recommendations by showing the need for further action
At the end of a capstone project students are expected to deliver two items: 1) a written report describing their work in detail, and 2) oral presentation explaining their work and results. This assessment is part of the final phase of the capstone project where the focus is to provide the details of the capstone project findings, discussion, conclusion and recommendations. You must demonstrate how well you understand the data you collected concerning your research objectives. Each capstone project will result in a final report that provides the details of the main project deliverables. Students in their respective group will work collaboratively to present and analyze their findings and discuss their interpretation of the solution(s) developed.
The details added in the final written report in terms of findings, discussion, conclusion and recommendations should meet high professional standards based on five main criteria described below. Students need to seek further guidance and support from their capstone project mentor to understand the following evaluating criteria of the final written report.
Integration - Has the student clearly presented findings of their research and demonstrated their skills in examining and analyzing the relevant field of knowledge area to a research problem? Has the student effectively integrated content and their interpretation to discuss the findings?
Potential Impact - Are the solution(s) detailed in the report demonstrate the potential impact to the intended/potential audience? Is the problem/solution identified as important by an industry, specific population of people, or society as a whole? Does the project build on the previous contribution further refine in the area (no matter how big or small)?
Implementation strategy - Does the report detail a well-constructed and realistic conclusion and recommendations for a client organization? Does the proposed solution(s) draw a clear method of implementation? Do the proposed suggestions in terms of conclusion and recommendations make sense and provide an innovative way forward?
Quality - Student must demonstrate a high level of quality and rigor in the written report and presentation. Were the presentation and interpretation of findings, discussion, conclusion and recommendations demonstrate sufficient depth to address the research problem the capstone project is meant to impact? Were the data analysis techniques applied and executed with high quality and integrity?
Clarity - Demonstrating clarity in written report and presentation is an extremely important evaluating criterion of the capstone project. Therefore, the students need to effectively communicate their ideas effectively to a wider audience. Students must keep it in mind that anyone with a little background related to their project work should be able to understand the premise, methods and result of their project work. Hence, it is important that students in their written report and presentation must communicate clearly and help the reader understand the progression of ideas through the presentation of logical points that are connected by cohesive transitions.
The final report is a group component. Each respective group will submit ONE report of 7000 - 8000 words (excluding references). It is normally acceptable to be 10% above or below this word limit.
Students need to revise and update their assessment 1, 2, and 3 to include in the final report. Assessment 1, 2, and 3 will NOT be graded again. Only the final part of the report that includes findings, discussion, conclusion and recommendations will be graded based on the criteria mentioned above. Students must revise the usage of the word limit. For example, assessment 1, 2, and 3 should be revised to confine within the word limit of 3000 words and the remaining word limit should be used for writing findings, discussion, conclusion and recommendations. Evaluation of the Capstone Project and Presentation
Your capstone project report will be evaluated by your project supervisor. Whereas, your presentation and oral defense will be evaluated by a panel of members that may include your project supervisor, capstone project coordinator, a representative from client organization, or invited industry guests. Your grade for the presentation will be awarded based on feedback given by the panel members.
Instructions for Capstone Project Presentation and Oral Defense
In addition to producing a major written report, all students will present an overview of their capstone project along with the poster in week 15. The poster should offer a succinct overview of the project idea/problem addressed in the capstone; methodology used to examine that problem; the results of your project work; and recommendations. It is recommended that student should also prepare presentation slides in PowerPoint or any other presentation software for their final presentation. The final presentation should clearly reflect of the body of their capstone project, including problem statement, objectives, methods, and deliverables demonstrating the potential impact of the project and successful integration of applied knowledge to solve the problem. Each member of the team is expected to cover some part of the presentation. Each student will be evaluated individually based on their performance in presentation and oral defense.
Presentations must NOT exceed 10 minutes with an additional 5 minutes of time for Q&A session. Each slide should have the Name and ID Number of student who prepared it for presentation. Students are required to practice their presentations to ensure fluidity and adherence to the time limit. The format for the oral presentation may include the following:
Title slide
Title of your project as it appears on your final project report
Your name
Name of sponsoring/client organization
Name of your faculty advisor
Introduction/Background
One slide describing your sponsoring/client organization, what does it do? Where is it?
Problem Statement
Explain the problem you addressed in your project.
Why was solving this problem was important for the organization?
Project Methods
Demonstrate step-by-step strategy for collecting data to solve the problem
Use graphics, tables, diagrams where appropriate
Results/Findings
Demonstrate the key findings of your project
Discussion
Discuss the key accomplishments
Conclusion and Recommendations
You should demonstrate the key recommendations derived from the completion of your capstone project
