Find a co-worker, parent, family member, or friend and ask if they agree or disagree with the following statements. Select a person you are curious about how she or he thinks about these statements.
Learning two languages during the early childhood years will overwhelm, confuse, and/or delay a child's acquisition of English.
The language development of dual language learners looks the same as monolingual language development.
Total English immersion from prekindergarten through third grade is the best way for a young dual language learner to acquire English.
Because schools don't have the capacity to provide instruction in all the languages represented by DLL children, programs should provide instruction in one common language-English.
Spanish-Speaking Latinos show social as well as academic delays when entering Kindergarten.
Native English speakers may experience academic and language delays in Dual Language Programs.
If the instruction in your program is delivered primarily in English, you do not need to worry about DLL children's progress in their home language.
If we label a dual language learner as a child with special needs, at least he will get some help
b) Make sure you ask their reasons for agreeing or disagreeing with these statements. Take notes.
c) summary of your interviewee's responses and tell us something about your interviewee's background (e.g. ECE teacher who does not speak languages other than English, ECE director or principal, parent of a bilingual child, etc.). Then discuss the educational implications of your interviewee's beliefs. For example, if your interviewee believes that children should be exposed to only English in early childhood then the educational implication of this is that bilingual education should not be allowed.
d) Finally include in your response if you agree or disagree with all your interviewee's statements. If you don't agree, how would you convince your interviewee of the contrary? Similarly, if you agree with your interviewee's beliefs justify your beliefs with references to the readings and research.
