Assignment:

For this project, you will be collecting information on major natural disasters that have occurred throughout the world from August 2022 til today and then compose a summary of the top two worst natural disasters in each of the following categories:

• top two earthquake disasters
• top two volcanic disasters
• top two flooding disasters
• top two mass-wasting disasters
• top two weather-related disasters (hurricanes, cyclones, typhoons, tornadoes, blizzards, etc.)
• top two "other" natural disasters (sinkholes, wildfires, coastal erosion, subsidence, etc.).
• this summary should include information on the type, description, effects, death/injury toll, and economic impact of each disaster. You can find information in newspapers, magazines, and on the internet.

1. The top two disasters are those with the greatest number of casualties and/or economic damage. A volcanic eruption that occurs in a sparsely populated area may be large, but if it doesn't cause casualties or property damage, it likely will not be in the top two. Disasters with only one or two casualties and/or one or two damaged structures may not be among the top and can probably be safely ignored as you collect your data.

2. For the "other" disasters, only consider natural disasters-that is those that occur without the aid of humans. Things such as oil and toxic material spills, airplane crashes (unless caused by something like a hurricane or volcanic eruption), and human induced explosions should not be considered.

3. Disasters like a drought or a disease epidemic are difficult to keep track of because they have no beginning date, a fuzzy ending date, and damage estimates come out sporadically. Because of this, do not include droughts and disease epidemics.

4. Not all information on a disaster comes out with the first news release. Imagine that a flood begins in Iowa on February 17th. On the first day, 250 homes are flooded resulting in $40 million in property damages, with no lives lost. However, the flooding continues for another two weeks. Every day, the news media reports new events such as the number of new homes flooded, the number of lives lost, and loss estimates in various towns, etc. You should try to keep track of all of this information for your summary. What you will turn in your report is a summary of the entire disaster, not all of the information.

5. The disasters must be listed in their categories and then in chronological order with the earliest disaster listed first and the latest disaster listed last. This document should include the following information for each disaster:

• Location of the Disaster: Countries such as Indonesia, Russia, and China are very large, so you will need to report more than just the country's name. Be specific.
• Type of Disaster: hurricane, earthquake, eruption, landslide, etc.
• Beginning dates, ending dates, and times of the disaster.
• A description of the disaster and a short statement describing the cause of the disaster.
• The total economic loss in dollars due to property damage, lost business, downtime, cleanup, recovery, etc. if available. If a monetary figure is not available, provide information on such things as the number of structures destroyed, the number of people affected, the number of acres destroyed, number of livestock destroyed, etc.
• The total number of human casualties: injuries and deaths.
• Referencing: This project requires you to compile information from many sources. This might include newspaper and magazine articles, television and radio reports, and internet URLs. You must make it clear where all of your information comes from. It is not appropriate to cut and paste from the internet. Your information should be summarized with citations.
• Mitigation: A well-thought-out statement of what, if anything, was done or could have been done by humans to prevent or reduce the economic damage or number of casualties for each disaster. This mitigation statement will be a significant part of your grade on this assignment.

6. Part of your grade is based on the ease with which your summary can be read and graded. In other words, appearance counts. Use an easy-to-read font that is 12-point in size. Format your paper to look clean and professional.
