Annotated bibliography: Working with Individuals & Families who are at higher risk for oppression & discrimination
The annotated bibliography will begin with a cover page in APA style and then the introduction (2 to 3 paragraphs). Use a heading to title this section Introduction. In the introduction the student will begin by discussing and reflecting upon why they selected this population, and making a case for this being a high risk population for discrimination, oppression, and poverty. These reflections can be from their observations and experiences. Citations and references are not needed, but can be used for this section. If citations are used follow APA style for formatting. ½ to one point will be deduced for writing errors and typos.
- In the annotated bibliography there are at least two references that include most current demographic data. Get the most current reference as you can, and get the data that are most directly related to your topic. If the data isn't within the past 2-3 years discuss why you think that is the case in your paragraphs, and if the data is more indirectly related to your topic explain this. Discuss the limitations of the data in the references you found.
- In the annotated bibliography there are at least two references that describe the types of problems this population experiences when engaging with social workers and human services providers, and agencies/organizations. This may include problems that people in this population may face navigating schools, employment, the military, health care, mental health systems, law enforcement, child welfare, elections/voting and more. For these references, clearly discuss the problems facing your population of choice, and how this population is at risk for discrimination and oppression
- Include at least two additional current references (the more current the better) that delineate the best practices for social workers for engaging and assessing individuals and families from these high risk groups as well as practices for individual and family interventions and evaluation.
Of course, you are strongly encouraged to have more than six entries, and some of the references/articles/books may be able to fit in more than one of these categories. For example, one article may discuss demographic information and problems faced by the population. But, for this assignment make a decision about the category of the references you select. Your selections should be as directly related to your topic as you can get.
- Formatting, writing, and relevance: The annotated bibliography section of this assignment should begin with the heading Annotated bibliography. And, these subheadings (Demographics, Description of the Problem, Best practices) should be used for the categories of references. Each item in the annotated bibliography should be typed in APA style. The references you select for these categories should be related to the categories, and your annotations for each should be 2-3 paragraphs Annotations should be well-written, clear and succinct and related to your topic.
Conclusion (use the heading Conclusion) Students will conclude this research in 2-3 paragraphs by discussing what they have learned about direct practice with this population, and how they plan to engage with an individual and family from this population when they meet with them in practice. Students will discuss how they can best provide effective, culturally competent and evidence based social work practice to these clients.
