Case: Samantha went to ski club with the school and had an accident resulting in a head injury. She has returned to school but seems to be having trouble with her short-term memory. Samantha seems to be asking the same questions repeatedly. This is also negatively impacting her testing abilities. She is also having difficulty recalling the names of classmates, faculty, and staff. This is consistent with what her parents are seeing at home.
Provide at least three (5) possible solutions to the problem.
Thoroughly explain why each solution was considered, including how it might look in your classroom.
For example:
Strategy #10: Have the student question any directions, explanations, and instructions not understood. Provide an explanation why this is a good option and how it might look in your classroom.
Strategy #30: Reduce the emphasis on competition. Competitive activities may cause the student to rush through work. Provide an explanation why this is a good option and how it might look in your classroom.
The primary issue that Samantha is displaying is difficulty with short-term memory. This negatively impacts her ability to retain information, answer questions correctly, and recall the names of classmates, faculty, and staff.
Possible solutions to this problem include:
Question 1. Strategy #1: Repeat, rephrase, and summarize information frequently. This will help Samantha to better process and retain information.
Question 2. Strategy #2: Use visual aids and other forms of technology to help Samantha remember information. It could include using a whiteboard or computer to display critical information, using flashcards or memory games, or recording lectures or class discussions.
Question 3. Strategy #3: Allow Samantha to take breaks more frequently throughout the day. This will help her avoid feeling overwhelmed and give her time to process information.
Question 4. Strategy #4: Modify assignments and tests to accommodate Samantha's needs better. This could involve providing extra time, allowing her to use notes, or providing oral versions of assignments.
The solution that I would choose for Samantha is strategy #1: repeating, rephrasing, and summarizing information frequently. This strategy will be the most effective in helping her to remember information and will allow her to be successful in school.
