Case: Social workers interact with a variety of individuals and must show cultural competence while engaging with clients, families, and colleagues. They collaborate with clients and families to determine services available that are appropriate for each situation. Social workers combine critical thinking skills with a cultural understanding of their clients' needs to make ethical and culturally competent decisions about their care.
Imagine your town council wants to recognize the efforts of local agencies that have been supportive of diversity, equity, and inclusion. They have invited you to speak at an upcoming event on behalf of your agency to showcase the agency's success in promoting cultural competence in the profession of social work. For this assessment, prepare the presentation that you would give at the event.
Select a social work setting from the Week 3 list as your focus for this assessment. You may use the same or a different setting than you used in prior assessments. Select a real or fictitious agency to use as an example for this assessment that would provide services in the setting you selected.
Research agency websites, policies and procedures, training, and known efforts that have been made in this setting to serve diverse clients according to their cultural needs.
Assessment Deliverable
Create a 10- to 12-slide presentation as if you were a social worker speaking to your town council about your agency and how it upholds the professional standards of cultural competence in the field of social work. Include the following in your presentation:
Summarize the services provided in the selected setting and the roles of social workers in that setting. (Examples of social worker roles from the textbook include advocate, broker, case manager, counselor, mediator, navigator, or researcher.) Describe the target populations receiving services in this setting and culturally competent ways that social workers can engage with these populations.
Describe the principles of cultural diversity appropriate for the selected setting and how an agency can adhere to the ethical responsibilities for cultural competence according to the NASW Code of Ethics. Describe the role of social workers in promoting cultural competency values within the agency and explain the risks of cultural incompetence.
Give examples of ways that social workers can reassure clients and families that their culture and diverse needs will be considered and respected during treatment as they receive services. Describe their options for a course of action if they experience cultural discrimination or unethical behavior from social workers while receiving services.
Cite the NASW Code of Ethics and at least 2 scholarly sources in your presentation to support your descriptions.
