Advocacy from social work organizations improves human rights through increasing access to basic resources to meet society's needs. Social workers can influence political action by analyzing the social problems faced by their clients and bringing awareness to leaders of how to affect meaningful change through policy development. For this summative assessment, you will focus on human rights and social justice issues relevant to a community in your area.

Who is involved with making decisions related to Community Alliance for Youth Empowerment (CAYE) Social Problem: The coalition aims to address the issue of youth unemployment and lack of educational opportunities in underserved communities.local policies in south Carolina, such as a school board, county commission, an agency's board of directors, city or state representatives, a committee or task force, or another group of leaders?

Consider how you might present the Community Alliance for Youth Empowerment (CAYE)social problem to this policy-making group to communicate your message and encourage them to advocate for your cause.

In a 7 to 10 slide presentation that informs your selected audience about a social justice problem and persuades policymakers to take action to improve the problem as if you were a social worker from a local agency advocating for change. Include the following information supported by evidence from your research:

  • Summarize the issue and scope of the social problem. Describe the size and characteristics of the affected population in your area. Summarize advocacy efforts that have been made in the past or that are currently underway to address the problem.
  • Explain how the selected problem relates to human rights issues. Explain how the problem affects other social justice issues. Explain the effect of the social problem on your clients and community.
  • Identify at least 1 need for a change related to the selected issue. Choose a policy-related change that is relevant to human rights in your community. Explain how a new policy or a change in policy might serve to affect social change and to advance human rights and social justice for populations affected by the issue.

Conclude your presentation with a call to leaders to take a specific action towards making the policy-related change that you proposed.
