Question: You will write memo in which you recommend pertinent community resources and services for client(s) presented in a case study.
To begin, read the case studies provided in Appendix A of this document. You will select one of these case studies to serve as the basis for your memo. As you read the case studies, imagine you are working as an assistant at a local behavioral health organization that provides low-cost counseling services to individuals and families. Your supervisor has asked you to write a memo in which you summarize your recommendations for the clients described in your chosen case study. Your supervisor wants you to focus your recommendations specifically on the resources/services available in your community and through the federal, state, and local departments of Children and Family Services. Your supervisor has asked that your finished memo be emailed to them and other members of the treatment team working with the individual or family in crisis.
After selecting a case study, examine the resources available in your community and through the various applicable departments of Children and Family Services. As you browse these websites, keep in mind you need to select resources appropriate and relevant to your chosen case study.
You can use the following link to access the website for the federal Administration for Children & Families: Administration for Children & Families
Toward the top of the site is a link to "find help," which is a good starting point in locating resources for the client(s) in your case study.
To find your state and local departments of Children and Family services, conduct a Google search for the term Department of Children and Family Services followed by your state, city, or county name.
For example, if you live in Buffalo, NY, conduct Google searches for "Department of Children and Family Services New York State" and/or "Department of Children and Family Services Buffalo."
Finally, to see what other resources might be available in your community, conduct a Google search for the term community resources followed by the name of your city and state.
For example, if you live in Cleveland, OH, conduct a Google search for "community resources Cleveland Ohio."
Find and select a total of at least three applicable resources (across the local, state, and federal levels). These will be the focus of the body of your memo.
summarize the concerns that brought the client to the behavioral health office.
Identify what the client was hoping to learn or gain by coming to the behavioral health office.
List at least three specific resources you would recommend for the client.
Whenever possible, provide the name and link for the selected resource.
Explain how you think each resource will benefit the client and help them address the concerns that caused them to come to the behavioral health office.
Conclude your memo by using a few sentences to summarize the client's primary concerns and your recommendations.
Case Study:
Twenty-four-year-old Nataya Graham and her three-year-old son Jay began coming to the office approximately one month ago. In speaking with a therapist on staff, Nataya revealed that Jay's father has been in and out of their lives since Jay was born. Nataya is concerned about her ability to consistently pay bills each month and financially support herself and Jay. She has expressed interest in receiving money from Jay's father to help pay for her son's basic needs and care. She is also curious about whether there might be any programs or options to help her cover some basic costs, such as food, childcare, and utilities. She is hopeful someone in the office will be able to guide her toward resources related to nutrition, filing for and collecting child support, WIC, and programs that might help her to lower or cover the costs of utilities and childcare.
