Identified Problem
I am a bed control nurse, and i identified that the air mattress blocked many patient rooms in the hospital. Several patients were waiting in the ED for long hours without beds. I also noticed that beds were blocked for 2-3 days because of air mattresses in the room. If the air mattresses were promptly removed from the patient rooms, patients could get the proper care without waiting in the ED for a long time. I recognized that this situation causes delays in patient care, increases ED LOS, and creates many patient complaints.
Interventions
I have three months of data on the blocked beds in the hospital because of the air mattresses in the rooms, and I will give it to the nurse manager. i am coordinating with nursing, housekeeping, and patient administration services and discussing the options to resolve the issue. The team can conclude by creating a space for the air mattress and regular mattress until they were picked up from the hospital by the air mattress company and replaced the room with a regular mattress. Soon after the patient is discharged from the floor, the air mattress can be moved by the designated staff and replaced with a regular mattress. So the housekeeping staff can clean the room, and the room will be ready for the patients from ED. So, the available empty spaces are open for veterans soon after it is cleaned by housekeeping.
