Objective:
To develop a handout for families focusing on suggestions for the promotion of children's social-emotional competence and to evaluate your handout.
Scenario:
Four-year-old Taylor and her family have lived in Germany for the past 2 years while her father served in the military. Taylor attended a Kindertagesstätte, a German nursery school, in her neighborhood and always looked forward to seeing and playing with her friends each day. Taylor's family recently moved back to the United States and they immediately enrolled her in an early childhood program.
Despite the fact that she has attended the program regularly for almost 2 months, Taylor still requires considerable coaxing to participate in any classroom activities. She often sits alone and watches the other children, but seldom joins in their play. Because you understand that it will take Taylor time to adjust to a new environment, you, as the head teacher, have taken extra measures to support her social-emotional skills during this transition period. However, you are concerned about the slow progress she is making and have scheduled a meeting with her family next week so they can be involved in this process.
1. In preparation for the meeting with Taylor's parents, construct a handout that briefly describes the typical social and emotional skills of a 4-year-old. Include suggestions for strategies that the family can use and reinforce at home to promote Taylor's social-emotional competence.
2. Be sure to read the SELF-EVALUATION section below to guide your thinking. Write self-evaluation after you have completed your handout.
3. Review the assessment rubric to see how your assignment and self-evaluation will be graded.
1. For each item in your handout:
a. Explain how this item addresses the issues in the scenario.
b. Provide evidence from the chapter supporting this item (with citations).
2. Describe and justify how your handout would improve teaching and learning in the scenario.
