Case: Read the following case study and answer the following questions.

Oscar hands the vacation request form to Nancy, the department secretary. He is surprised to see an angry expression on her face.

"No, no," she says. "It just won't work this way. You know I have to get this form one month before you intend to start your vacation. You're giving me just 21 days notice. Sorry. Rules are rules."

Oscar protests that he needs the time off to see his mother, who is ill. He gets very agitated and starts shouting.

Oscar and Nancy's situation fits the definition of conflict to a "T." Like every good definition, this one provides not only a sound concept but ideas for action as well. The definition is:

Conflict is a struggle between two parties who perceive their goals as incompatible.
