Ben is a 25-year-old male who was involved in a motor vehi­cle accident. He was ejected from his car upon impact with another vehicle and suffered a significant brain injury. Upon admission to the emergency room, Ben demonstrates the following: appropriate behavior in response to environmental stimuli (e.g., will move head toward a source of sound); arousal is incon­sistent; attempts to speak during periods of arousal with some intelligible verbalizations; can move all four extremities but is inconsistent upon command. Describe Ben's awareness of himself and his environment:

a. When he is aroused, he is aware of himself and his environment.

b. He is consistently awake, aware, attentive and alert regarding himself and his environment.

c. He does not demonstrate any arousal or awareness of his surroundings.
