Suddenly turned and felt left knee pain and collapsed

Question

An adult patient presents following a fall. They say that yesterday while out on the street, they suddenly turned and felt left knee pain and collapsed. They have been hobbling around since then and cannot bear any weight. They take medications for hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Their vitals are BP 150/90 HR 90, RR 18, Temp 98,6, and Sat02 98% on RA. Upon exam, they have very limited range of motion of the left knee. It is 30 degrees of flexion most comfortably. There is a moderate effusion and severe tenderness of the lateral infrapatellar area. However, the knee does not feel unstable (Lachman's test is very hard to perform due to severe pain). Distal pulses are palpable and symmetrical, and the ROM of the ankle is normal. X-ray of the left knee is pictured below. What should be done for this patient to clarify the diagnosis ?
