Succession planning versus Career Development
Assume that you have been brought in to consult with a growing organization as it prepares to open a new facility. The new facility will be a multipurpose regional office with 1,500 employees in a variety of disciplines. The new employees will be hired for all positions, ranging from a regional VP and senior staff to the customer service team and the distribution/warehouse team with 400 employees. The new facility will be similar to 8 existing facilities in other regions and is one of 3 new regional offices planned to open in the next 3 years.
As the organization continues to grow, it is finding increasing difficulty in recruiting qualified employees to fill not only key management positions, but positions at all levels of the organization. For the discussion questions below make assumptions that are reasonable to develop your answers, but state your assumptions.
Recommend a plan to develop first, a succession plan or a career development plan. Explain and justify your choice. Remember that both time and resources are limited.
Recommend a policy for the development of a career development plan for employees. Include details such as administrative requirements, timing recommendations, staff and supervisor training, and other pertinent items.
Recommend a policy for the development of a succession plan including necessary steps and details.
