Asylums to Community Care discusses how the shift between these two styles of mental health treatment affected psychiatry, psychiatric patients and their broader care. The documentary highlights the changes in psychopharmacy and government policy that enabled the transition from asylums to community based care (Weiss et al., 2020). For one, I believe this shift played a role in further destigmatizing psychiatry and mental health challenges by enabling patients with mental health struggles to exist more prominently in the community. The shift also encouraged focus on the widening number of pharmaceuticals that could be utilized for the mental health community. The increase in psychopharmacy diversity and destigmatization through exposure were two benefits that helped further mental health care in the US. However, gaps remain.
