Question: In a study of the effects of REM-sleep deprivation, volunteers spend 3, 4, or 5 nights in a sleep lab. While in the lab, they are placed in one of three different groups. One group is awakened every time they enter

REM-sleep. (REM-sleep is a time when dreaming occurs.) A second group is awakened during non-REM-sleep, and a third group is allowed to sleep through the night. After the experience, the participants are tested on reaction time, a set of anagram problems (each problem involves taking a set of scrambled letters and rearranging them into a word), and a self-report survey in which they indicate (on a series of 1-5 scales) the extent to which the experience has affected them.
