Maya and Sebastian are both four years old. Maya has been diagnosed with an expressive language disorder while Sebastian has been diagnosed with a specific learning disability in listening comprehension. Maya's expressive language disorder "refers to how people construct the words, symbols, or gestures they want to communicate to others"(Powell,6.1,2019). At this age "a student might say "The cat lick his paw" or "Last week, Marta bring a frog to class (Powell,6.3,2019). Sebastians issue with listening comprehension refers to the inability to understand information presented orally. "For example, not being able to answer an oral question or not understanding to line up at the door when the teacher verbally prompts"(Powell,3.1,2019).
Some strategies that would work well for a student like Maya might be to keep the student in a location that keeps their attention on the subject in class. Another might be to paraphrase information and speak in shorter sentences so that everyone can understand. As for Sebastian, it would be best to give frequent feedback, breakdown big concepts into small tasks, and give more time for carrying out assignments.
I would take initiative in making sure that the parents are aware of the methods being taken. I would want to make sure that they are also using similar methods at home as well. Making the family aware of methods used with the student is vital and should cover improving and practicing speech or language in the home environment. Doing this will keep the student on a type of schedule and regimen that will allow them to stay on track with their learning process.
