During your stage at the Neuro institute, your head nurse introduces you to Katia, a 21-year-old who has been struggling with symptoms of schizophrenia for the past year. When you first met Katia, she struck you as non-responsive. When you entered the room, she did not turn to face you, nor did she respond to your 'Good morning'. She did not even react when you told her that she had received permission to be discharged for the weekend. You report her behavior to your head nurse who tells you that this is typical of her. She rarely expresses any motivation or desires, but when it comes to activities or appointments, she is somewhat organised and compliant. Unfortunately, she was involved in an accident over the weekend that resulted in a very specific lesion in both the mesocortical and mesolimbic circuits of the brain, causing an increase in dopamine transmission. Also following the accident, Katia's mood became much less stable, and she started having difficulty controlling her anger and expressing extreme emotions.
