Kevin and Max are twin brothers. Both were raised in poverty and were exposed to abuse and alcoholism in families. Throughout their childhood, they received constant visits from child and family services workers, police. They were victims of discriminatory treatment at their schools. They both worked hard and graduated from university with a major in social work. Kevin had tremendous empathy for the people who are in conditions of poverty. Max, on the other hand, treated clerical staff and others in subservient positions in the agency in an overbearing and heavy-handed manner. In this short story, could you explain the difference in approach used by Keven and Max? Taking Max as an exemplar, in what ways can professionalism be oppressive? How might an understanding of poverty as a form of oppression at a cultural and structural level in society help to change Max's behavior?
