Part 1:

i. A simply supported beam supports a trapezoidal loading distribution - see Figure 1.A [over]. In terms of ‘x ‘, develop shear force and bending moment expressions for this arrangement and calculate the (numerical) values of the shear force and bending moment at the following locations:

x = 3m and x = 8m

ii. At a later date, an additional 50 kN central point load is added to the trapezoidal loading distribution - see Figure 1.B [over]. In terms of ‘ x ‘, develop shear force and bending moment expressions for the range 5m ≤ x ≤ 10m and calculate the (numerical) values of shear force and bending moment at the location: x = 8m.

Part 2:

The simply-supported beam arrangement shown in Figure 2 [over] has a flexural rigidity, EI, of 180000 kNm². Based on this arrangement:
i. Evaluate the deflection expression for the loaded beam
ii. Identify the location of the maximum deflection in Span B-C to 2 decimal places
iii. Determine the numerical values of the maximum deflection in Span B-C and also at the free-end of the cantilever (i.e. where ‘ x ‘ = 0 m)
