Exercise 1

Modeling Lung Mechanics

In this exercise, make a model of the respiratory system using a soda bottle to represent the pulmonary cavity, a swim cap to represent the diaphragm, and a balloon to represent a lung. You will then manipulate the volume of the intrapleural space of the model and observe the effect this has on the model lung.

Procedure

Put on your safety goggles.
Use the scissors to cut the top off of the soda bottle just above the label. Try to make your cut as smooth and even as possible.
Keep the top half of the soda bottle and discard the bottom half.
Insert the balloon into the bottle and stretch the open end of the balloon around the opening of the soda bottle.
Cut a circle out of the swim cap with a diameter of 10-12 cm.
Stretch the swim cap piece around the cut end of the bottle to completely close the hole. Tape the swim cap in place, making sure the swim cap is as taut as possible and the tape completely seals any gaps between the swim cap and the soda bottle. See figure 3.

Take a photo of your completed model along with a piece of paper with today's date visible in the photo.
Upload the image into Photo 1.
Pinch the middle of the swim cap attached to the bottom of the bottle and pull downward while observing the balloon inside of the bottle. What happens to the balloon inside of the bottle?
Record your observations in Observation 1.
Using the scissors, puncture a hole in the bottle.
