PART 1: SWOT ANALYSIS

Section 1: Strengths, Weaknesses Opportunities and Threats Aligned to my Career Goals

List and explain in proper and explicit detail five (5) strengths, five (5) weaknesses, five (5) opportunities, and five (5) threats that align with your career goals. Grades are allocated to the detailed explanation, relevance, and connection to your career goal.

Strengths:

  1. What professional qualities do I have? - Try to be as specific as possible. Remember a time when you worked or were engaged in a project at school and what abilities did you exercise then?
  2. What do I do well? What am I really good at? - What courses/subjects did you enjoy the most? What other skills do you have? Example: Can you cook, paint, or repair cars? Write down all the things you are good at although they may seem irrelevant to the job you are looking for.
  3. What personal qualities do I possess? - Do your friends come to you for advice?
  4. What do people like about you the most?
  5. What makes you stand out that is unique and sets you apart from your peers?

Weaknesses:

  1. What do I not do well? - Maybe there is a specific thing you know you can't do. For example, I am terrible at mechanical tasks.
  2.  What tasks do I usually avoid doing? Where am I wasting time? The fact that you do not want to do something may mean that you do not enjoy doing it.
  3. What are the roots of my failures? - Try to figure out what are the reasons behind any failure you may have experienced in the past. What did you learn from it?
  4. What do others do better than I?
  5. What are the top complaints people have about me? What do other people see as your weaknesses?

Opportunities:

  1. What trends do I see in my professional area? - What are the recent trends? What type of people are getting hired? What skills do they have? Is it in a growing field?
  2. How can I get noticed? - What can I do to draw attention to myself professionally?
  3. Is there a steppingstone to get me to my dream job?  Who can support me in achieving my goal? For example- Who can you learn from? Who can introduce you to the right people? Who can help you improve your resume? Is there a person who can show you how to use your strengths in the best way possible? Who will pick you up when things don't go well?
  4. What skills are you missing that you can learn? For example - What new technology can you learn?
  5. What emerging opportunities are there for you in the market?

Threats:

  1. What obstacles do I face? - Remember this is something that you have limited to no influence on. Is there an economic situation that prevents you from getting a job? Who are your biggest competitors and what are they doing?
  2.  Are there changes in labour politics? - Can you work legally? Are there certain mandatory training or educational requirements that are required?
  3. Is technology changing my professional field? - Is technology changing the future of my industry? How do I stay ahead of that trend?
  4. What shifts in demographics are becoming threats to your career opportunities?
  5. What shifts in the social or cultural environment could pose potential challenges?
