While looking over this reading, describe the strengths and weaknesses of their chosen interventions concerning seatbelt interventions.

When looking over the types of theories and interventions, I feel the best way to promote seat belt safety would be to use the Theory of Planned Behavior. Knowing that TPB is knowing the intentions the person has in preforming the behavior (Rural Health Information Hub, 2018). Using this you can analyze if the individual is in an environment that does not see a safety issue in not wearing a seat belt. Or if they are in an area that people see seat belts as a must use. Knowing a persons attitude towards a behavior allows for a more successful promotion plan. Also, knowing what is the social norm in their environment can help in educating and helping them understand why seat belt use should be considered important.

In 2021 the national seat belt use rate was 90.4%, saving an estimate of over 14,000 lives in 2017 (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, n.d.). With people showing an understanding in seat belt use, I believe promotions like visual aids and video ads would be the most beneficial as reminders of the dangers that can result from not using a seat belt. 51% of the people killed in motor vehicle accidents were not wearing a seat belt in 2020, which was a 4% increase from 2019 (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, n.d.). Buckling up can reduce your risk of fatal injury by 45% and moderate injury by 50% (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, n.d.). Reminding people of the fatalities and injuries from not buckling up can help them remember why they do it.
