Case Study
Danni is in Grade 2 and it is almost time for the Christmas break. Danni is able to read a few sight words, but she has trouble sounding words out. Grade Two math is too hard for her. Her favourite class is art. She loves to draw and her pictures are very imaginative.
Danni's Grade 1 teacher had suggested that she stay behind in Grade One because she had not yet learned to read well enough for comprehension or fluency. She knew her letter sounds but was not able to read words. Her math skills were exceptionally weak. By the end of Grade One she did not have one-to-one correspondence. Danni did not relate socially with her classmates in Grade One. She played by herself often. The Grade One teacher hoped that Danni would relate better to students who were a little younger than she was. Her parents did not accept the recommendation to repeat and put Danni on into Grade Two.
Danni's Grade Two teacher loves collaborative learning. Her classroom is a noisy busy place. She expects much of her students but is kind and gentle as well as firm. The children respect her and work well for her. In her class, children are invited to work in groups to solve problems, write stories, explore questions, and discover. Danni does not enjoy the group work unless it involves using the imagination. Danni has a vivid imagination and loves to tell and hear stories. As Danni falls farther and farther behind, her behaviour becomes more problematic. She refuses to work with her classmates in a group. She will hide under her desk. She will not go out for recess. During high classroom activity it is more likely she will hide under the coats and hope no one will find her. Often when she is given work to do, she will look at it, decide she can't do it and fold her arms. She will not even pick up a pencil. Her behaviour has become a big distraction to her classmates.
You have been hired to work in Danni's classroom as she has now become a behaviour problem. What would you do?
