Scenario:
You work for a company which produces a variety of products. As a new employee you have been given an initial probationary period to help you familiarise yourself with the company's strategies of project control and implementation. To encourage your independent thinking, you have been given free range to spend a limited period researching existing market products and formulate a project of your own.

Task 1: Formulate and record outline specifications (A.C.1.1)

- Produce for inspection a log book which shows clearly with dated entries your ideas for the chosen project. The diary entries may include initial thought concept tools such as mind maps and indicate any research which has been performed.

Your log book should include entries which demonstrate that you have considered both technical and non-technical requirements relevant to your chosen project, such as:
- Costs
- Time scales
- Standards
- Legislation
- Resource implications
- Ethics
- Sustainability
- Roles and responsibilities.

Task 2: Identify factors for project selection

- Produce a report that clearly shows

1. The rationale for selection of the chosen project

2. The feasibility of the project has been evaluated

3. An initial critical analysis of the outline specification.

4. Identified goals and limitations.

Aim of this Assignment

In this assignment, you will undertake a number of activities designed to develop your skills of independent enquiry in order to show that you can formulate, specify, and plan to produce a product within a given timescale.

Learning outcome

Be able to formulate a Protect - In this assessment you will have the opportunity to present evidence that shows you are able to:

1.1 Formulate and record possible Project outline specifications.

1.2 Identify the factors that contribute to the process of paged selection

1.3 Produce a specification for the agreed project

1.4 Produce an appropriate project plan for the agreed project

Task 1- A project log book with substantial entries.
Task 2- A fully referenced report.
Task 3- A project specification (separate from the report)
Task 4- A project plan.

Opportunities for Merit grading for task 2

Your report will present a clear justification of why the project specification must address each of the relevant factors that have been taken into consideration for your particular project (i.e. standards, safety, service life. competition, processes, costs etc.) (M1)

Task 3: Produce a specification for the agreed project

- From your original statements of the project needs (project brief), produce a formal project specification, which will be used during the timescale of the project

The specification includes both technical and non technical requirements.

- For a design type project, it is suggested that you include elements of a product design specification (PDS) for the technical requirements.

Task 4: Produce an appropriate project plan for the agreed project (A.C.1.4)

- Produce a plan for the project undertaken which takes into account activities, timescales, milestones and includes any deliverables and monitoring stages of the project.

Opportunities for Merit grading for task 4

To achieve higher than the pass level, the project plan will be based on methods which use appropriate evaluation and review techniques such as PERT. (M2)
