Strategies for Leaders to Retain Employees
1. Support system. Leaders need to provide a support system for teachers and staff to discuss and improve their work. We use PLC and Team model to meet every day during one of our prep periods. Providing feedback and evaluations will allow teachers and staff to improve efficiency when they know what they are doing right and wrong.
2. Opportunities for growth. Professional development opportunities made available to teachers and staff members that fit their needs and desires, not just a generic one. If PD is meaningful it is more effective and typically applied to the classroom and school. PD opportunities allow teachers and staff to be feel valued and appreciated for what skills and talents they bring to the table. Through PD members could gain skills that could allow them to take on different roles at the school if the admin allows for that the stretch and growth.
3. Appreciation and Value. The showing of appreciation, value, and recognition helps teachers and staff to want to stay where they are working. Teachers want to stay when they feel the sense of family, appreciation, and love instead of fear and secrecy. Examples would be: faculty meetings centered on needs not just information, teacher of the month, gift cards for hard work, PTO support for teachers and classroom, etc. Provide adequate pay scale and value for more activities someone is involved in.
4. Mission-driven and transparency. When people know where and why they are doing what they do, they are more apt to put forth more effort and stay for the long haul. If someone can't understand why then it's easy to just leave a place to go to the next for more money. Money is always an issue but if someone feels appreciated and wanted the money isn't everything, and they know where the money is being spent and on what items for the budget.
5. Strong and effective leadership. Leaders who show support, a strong source of leadership, discipline, and authority allow others to follow in line. When leaders know the strengths of their teachers, staff, and parents they will regularly set their members for success in positions they will be most effective.
