Assessment brief
You are a team of HR Consultants pitching to work with a large International Organisation: ArcelorMittal.
ArcelorMittal is the world's leading steel and mining company, with a presence in 60 countries. ArcelorMittal'soperations span across many industries, and they employ ~168,000people of which 500 are their top managers. The group is managed according to region, however, they actively make use of the company's global presence, for example in benefitting from centres of scale in procurement. Diversity is important and visible at the level of the Board of Directors, but the gender balance of the executive officers and management committee could be better.
While this award-winning organisation is very successful and they have always invested heavily in their employees, they are a young company and they have a challenge: talent management. Thus, they need help with important strategic aspects of managing resourcing, development, rewards and employment relations.
In some locations the company is projecting a forthcoming recruitment crisis . They are concerned about their ability to recruit sufficient numbers and quality of people at all levels of the organisation, but especially so with regards to their global leadership development pipeline. Many top managers are approaching retirement age and the company must act decisively to put in place sophisticated plans to secure their future.Global trends in ageing workforce are of concern especially in the US, the UK, Japan, Germany, France, South Korea, and China, and this makes the situation of ever more urgent worry. In many developed countries birth rates are also falling.
At the same time, a number of specialist vacancies, in health and safety and ITfor example, have been open a while and ArcelorMittal have had to employ temporary agency staff and subcontract work to ensure these important roles are covered. Safety is a top priority in the company.ArcelorMittalare keen to fill these vacancies ASAP; it is not clear to them what is hindering their ability to attract suitable candidates.
Finally, in line with the company's ethos on sustainability, ArcelorMittal want to demonstrate their commitment to social value. This is also a client requirement in key locations where ArcelorMittal want to expand their business activities, including the UK and Australia. The top managers firmly believe in this. April 2017, Lakshmi N Mittal, Chairman and Chief Executive, said:
"Our 10 sustainable development outcomes were designed to ensure we manage to stay ahead of expectations, and also demonstrate our understanding that long-term success lies not only in creating shareholder value but also in actively contributing to society's needs."
Despite an element of value-based recruitment being integrated into the HR processes, not all people within the company share this view, and so ArcelorMittal face a development challenge. How to best mobilise resources to ensure all employees work to the company's ethos on sustainability and social value especially?
ArcelorMittal are looking for support from professional consultants in developing their strategic response to the abovementioned challenges. You are a team of HR Consultants pitching to work with ArcelorMittal.
In selecting suitable contractors, ArcelorMittal use the same rigorous approach that they use in recruiting employees, that is, an assessment centre. As learnt HR consultants, you know that assessment centres often include group activities as well as individual tasks.
ArcelorMittal would like to meet your team. You will have an opportunity to present your analysis and recommendations during their visit to Nottingham Thursday 17 - Friday18 February2022; a timetable will follow nearer to the time. ArcelorMittal also require each consultant to submit a short business report after the meetings. These individual reports are due on Sunday 20 February 2022.
ArcelorMittal showcase their talent management framework within the ‘Valuing your Talent' programme and have presented the enclosed case study to help you understand their approach.
Please do consult academic literature and carry out extensive research on the company and relevant other materials, for example those relating to international business, international HRM, talent management, global trends, etc. In your meeting with the company and in the reports you will submit to them, ArcelorMittal are looking for in-depth analysis together with your recommendations. They are specifically keen to see your alignment of strategic concepts and operational issues.
