SEX SELLS

What caught my attention for this week topic is use of sex to gain money or more accurately prostitution. The article I found investigated on the quality of work in the sex industry and factors that affect the quality experienced by its customers."Prostitution and other activities in the sex industry have been conceptualised as form of labour, or at least as income-generating activities.As labour, these activities are exposed to particular risks  with respect to health, working conditions, exploration and stigmatisation" ( Adriaenssens, Geymonat & Oso, 2016).

The article speaks on gaining the perspective from scholars on the quality of work in the sex industry and  that tie in to larger discussion such as human trafficking, the health sector, introduction of new technologies and regimes that include prostitute policies ( Adriaenssens, Geymonat & Oso, 2016). Chapter 16 in Human Sexuality speaks on the ubiquitous risks faced by sex workers when they engage income generating activities. "Studying commercial sex from a quality of work perspective is fraught with a number of methodological difficulties. For one thing, it is not easy to gain access to first hand information about sex working practices to in a field that is characteristed by a high level of secrecy, shame, stigma and criminalisation" (Adriaenssens, Geymonat & Oso, 2016).

This study can be used to shed light in the sex industry and provide ways for persons using sex as labour to protect themselves from STIs and possible venues of human trafficking in the Massachusetts area where I reside. "Given the stigmatized and often risky nature of sex work, many scholars and social service professionals have studied entry into it. There are two general explanations. One emphasizes negative experiences in childhood and adolescence, such as physical and sexual abuse, family instability, poverty, homelessness, and contact with exploitative men such as pimps or drug dealers" (Hyde & Delamater, 2020).
