Rosenhan's article for the issues of mental health stigma. This stigma includes negative stereotypes and fears from the general population about people with mental illnesses, but it also includes biased perceptions and self-fulfilling prophecies created by people working within the field, as practicing mental health professionals (such as doctors and nurses in mental hospitals). This week, brainstorm with the class about ways that we can decrease mental health stigma. Give the class at least one suggestion for how mental health stigma might be battled within the field (e.g., training sessions for counselors), as well as at least one suggestion for how it might be decreased in the "real world" with average citizens who are less familiar with psychology and psychological categories of various types of mental illness.
