Having covered the United Monarchy this week, we have encountered the lives of Saul, Ish-bosheth, David, Solomon, and Rehoboam. What is remarkable about the Former Prophets/Deuteronomistic History is the realism in portraying the life of storied figures such as the first kings of Israel. Instead of eradicating any mention of moral failure, character flaws, or bad decisions, the books in the Former Prophets present the virtues and vices, good and bad, smart and stupid aspects of their lives. Saul is at once brave and paranoid; David is compassionate in his dealings with Saul but ruthless to Uriah; Solomon is pious and wise but also idolatrous and foolish.
In one sense, the honest portrayal of these figures with their good and bad demonstrates the historical honesty of the author; it also shows that the author of these historical books is capable of praising and condemning the same person, but the reader is left with the difficult task of determining whether a given person is good or bad.
In the initial post, state your opinion on both Saul and David. Are they good people? Are they bad people? Are they a mix of both? Whatever your opinion, provide evidence from the life of Saul and David (with David you can reach into the Psalms if you would like) to support your answer. Readers have typically regarded Saul as a bad man whereas David is "a man after God's own heart" (1 Sam 13:14). Can either be a good leader with moral lapses? If so, why or why not?
