Case Background: the report states "Australia's Black Summer of 2019-20 was characterised by catastrophic bushfires" (Climate Council of Australia 2020 p. 1). The 'catastrophy' to which the report refers is reflected in the "Climate Impacts" listed on page IV of the Report. The report attributes the extreme weather to climate change. The report centres on New South Wales and the ACT because the "effects of the bushfires were most severe in these areas" (Climate Council of Australia 2020 p. 1).
(a) Refer to the Key Findings of the report, which are listed on pages I to IV of the document, and for the purposes of this question, Finding 5. "One or more of the ideas expressed in the finding is consistent with the notion of phasing out industrial capitalism and replacing it with natural capitalism?" Explain what is meant by that statement.
(b) "Phasing out the use of 'coal, oil and gas' in producing goods and services would fall within Lovins' (2004) three principles of natural capitalism?" Explain, with reference to each of the three principles.
(c) "Certain ideas in Finding 5 are consistent with sustainable development, including calling on ethical argument to support the call to "phase out coal, oil and gas"" (Climate Council of Australia 2020 p. II). Explain. Do you agree with the ethical argument? Why or why not?
(d) The conclusion to the report (page 23) states that Australia urgently needs to plan to cut our domestic greenhouse gas emissions to net zero". What is meant by 'net zero emissions' (research on-line)?
