Nylon is a synthetic polymer made up of amide linkages formed when a diacid condenses with a diamine. The different types of nylons are identified by the number of carbons possessed in the diamine (first number and the diacid (second number). Nylon is used in a variety of materials ranging from women's hosiery to surgical sutures. Nylon-6,6 is a polyamide polymer made by the condensation of 1,6-diaminohexane (H2NCH2CH2CH2CH2CH2CH2NH2) and hexanedioic acid (HOOCCH2CH2CH2CH2COOH).
A) Draw the monomer unit of this polymer. (Hint: one end of the diamine condenses with one end of the diacid forming an amide with a water molecule as a by-product - total of 12 carbons in the monomer.)
B) Draw a segment of this polymer possessing 2 amide groups.
C) Another synthetic polymer used for sutures which are absorbable in the body is polyglycolide. If nylon is called a polyamide, what would one call polyglycolide?
