A company produces vinegar products and discharges between 50,000 and 200,000 gallons per day (131 to 525 L / min) of a liquid waste stream that contains only acetic acid at a concentration of 80 mg/L. They will need to neutralize the waste stream with 50% NaOH ( which means 0.5 kg NaOH per kg solution; with a density of 1.53 kg/L this equals an 765 g/L solution of NaOH - convince yourself this is correct). Size a metering pump to dose the 50% NaOH at a rate to meet the effluent pH standard of 7.2. In other words, at what flow rate (mL / min) should NaOH flow and mix with the waste stream to neutralize it to pH 7.2. Calculate the flow rate needed for both the low and high discharge rate.
