ASSIGNMENT OBJECTIVES:
To enable the students to determine the responsibilities of personnel and organizations in complying with the requirements of Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), 1994 and its regulations and to recommend strategies to avoid recurrence of workplace accidents.
ASSIGNMENT QUESTION:
Syarikat Pembinaan Teguh Sdn.Bhd is a construction company focusing on housing development and high rise building and have experience in building construction for 20 years. The company is also one of the prominent and pioneer group to use aluminum form work system for their structural work and is well versed in the IBS system.
Currently the company is constructing 2 blocks of 40 levels of service apartment, 10 units of shop lot, 1 unit of TNB substation and I unit of waste chamber. The site is located in Seremban 2, Negeri Sembilan. Mr. Shahrom is Project Manager for this construction site and site project management team is supported by six sub-contractors and approximately 200 workers which are from 5 major trades of work which are bar bender, carpenter, concreter, aluminum formwork installer and excavation work. Cost of project is RM40.5 millions.
The site employed a competent safety and health officer (SHO) and also established a safety and health committee chaired by the project manager.
A report from the committee showed that two accidents occurred recently. The first accident involved a sub contractor worker, Mr. Ghulam Rasol, who was a worker with Syarikat Lim Huat Sdn. Bhd., fell from an open edge at level 20 while installing aluminum formwork. He died instantly.
The second accident occurred a week after the fatal case. The accident involved Mr. Subramaniam, a permanent worker with syarikat Pembinaan Teguh Sdn.Bhd. He was a traffic controller accidently hit by a lorry delivering bricks inside the site. He lost his right leg.
