Ivan Pavlov, a Russian physiologist, started the work of classical conditioning back in year 1897. He did a study that involved working with dogs and their responses to certain things.

For example, he would ring a bell and then the dog was given food. So therefore, every time the bell would be rang and food was given to them, the dogs were slobbering a lot. Then it came to where even if the bell was rung and there was no food given, the dogs would still slobber a lot. This study and the response it got is classical conditioning. Classical conditioning is when the bell is rang (neutral stimulus) right before the dogs were given food (unconditioned stimulus). Edwin Twitmyer also discovered classical conditioning in 1902. He studied the reflex of students when he hit the tendon on their knee after ringing a bell. Although Twitmyer's research didn't get much attention because he didn't dive deeper into the causes or reasonings of his findings. Still today, because of the experiments from Pavlov, leads to more research of classical conditioning.
